World Elder Abuse Awareness Day: Advocating for Safe, Respectful Ageing in Western Australia

By Dr. Bindu Anatula

As World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th approaches, it’s crucial for us to address the respect and dignity that our elders deserve. At Health by Nurture, we are dedicated to the health and well-being of older adults, and I have a special passion for caring for this vibrant yet vulnerable segment of our population here in Western Australia.

Understanding Elder Abuse
Elder abuse can manifest in many forms including financial, emotional, psychological, physical, sexual, or social. It often occurs in what should be the safest place—a person’s home—and is typically carried out by someone known to the older person. This betrayal of trust can transform a safe haven into a place of danger.

The Warm Safe Home Project
In line with our focus on elder safety, the Warm Safe Home (WSH) project initiated by Dr. Becky Nevin Berger uses the symbol of a house to represent older people’s right to feel secure. The project involves community members, including students, artists, and seniors, who come together to craft small-scale model houses. These activities are not only creative but also serve as powerful forums for discussing elder abuse and emphasizing the importance of respecting our elders.

Local Resources and Support in WA
Elder abuse affects many older Western Australians and can involve various forms of abuse. To combat this, several local resources are dedicated to supporting our elders:
