Understanding & Managing Anxiety: A Guide from Dr. Taf 🧠💙

DR Taf

Hi Everyone!
First, I want to say a huge thank you for the warm welcome to Bunbury! It’s a beautiful town filled with wonderful people, and I feel incredibly lucky to be here.

As I prepared to start at Health by Nurture, I found myself experiencing a familiar feeling—anxiety. Settling into a new place and beginning a new role brought on waves of nervous energy, something many of us have felt at different times in life. But what exactly is anxiety, and when does it become a problem?

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural fight-or-flight response to stress, making us more alert to potential dangers. However, when anxiety becomes persistent, excessive, or interferes with daily life, it may be an anxiety disorder.

Common Symptoms of Anxiety:

🩺 Physical Symptoms: Rapid heart rate, sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea.
💭 Emotional Symptoms: Excessive worry, restlessness, irritability, a sense of impending doom.
🛌 Behavioural Symptoms: Avoidance of situations, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances.

Many people experience anxiety at some point—but if it starts to affect your everyday life, it’s time to seek support.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

There are different types of anxiety disorders, each with unique symptoms:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Persistent, excessive worry about everyday life.

  • Panic Disorder: Sudden, intense panic attacks with physical symptoms like heart palpitations.

  • Social Anxiety Disorder: Extreme fear of social situations or being judged.

  • Specific Phobias: Intense fear of objects or situations (e.g., heights, flying).

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Unwanted, repetitive thoughts and compulsions.

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Anxiety and flashbacks triggered by trauma.

What Causes Anxiety?

Anxiety is complex and can be influenced by multiple factors:
🔬 Genetics – Family history of anxiety can increase risk.
🧠 Brain Chemistry – Imbalances in serotonin and dopamine may contribute.
🌍 Life Events – Stress, trauma, and major life changes can be triggers.
💡 Personality Traits – Perfectionism and excessive worrying can increase vulnerability.

How to Manage Anxiety

While anxiety can feel overwhelming, there are ways to manage and reduce symptoms.

🌿 Lifestyle Strategies for Anxiety Relief

🏃 Exercise – Physical activity releases endorphins, improves mood, and reduces stress.
🥗 Healthy Diet – A balanced diet supports gut health, which plays a role in producing serotonin (your "feel-good" hormone).
😴 Good Sleep Hygiene – Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night.
🧘 Mindfulness & Relaxation – Meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises help calm the nervous system.
Limit Caffeine & Alcohol – These can trigger or worsen anxiety.

Did you know? 🌿 In Canada, doctors are prescribing nature therapy, encouraging patients to spend time outdoors in green and blue spaces—something we’re lucky to have plenty of in Bunbury!

When to Seek Professional Help

If lifestyle changes aren’t enough, therapy and medical support can be highly effective:

💬 Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – Helps reframe negative thought patterns.
💡 Exposure Therapy – Gradual exposure to fears to reduce their impact.
🧘 Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) – Encourages mindfulness and values-based actions.
👥 Group Therapy – Offers a supportive environment to share experiences.

Medication options are also available and can be discussed with your GP if needed.

Building a Support System

Having strong social connections can make a big difference:
✔️ Talk about it – Open conversations with trusted friends or family help.
✔️ Seek professional support – GPs, psychologists, and therapists can guide you.
✔️ Join support groups – Connecting with others who share similar experiences can be invaluable.
